shape of the regression kernel based on its overlap with hypothesized activation ROI (right). As the regression kernel is positioned at various locations throughout the image, the algorithm checks whether it also overlaps with the activation kernel (purple). If there is no overlap, all voxels within the kernel contribute to linear regression as per the standard PVEc method. Otherwise, the algorithm checks whether the overlap affects the center voxel. If the center voxel is affected, the linear regression includes only the voxels which are also within the activation kernel. Conversely, if the center voxel is not within the activation kernel, the linear regression excludes all voxels within the activation ROI.

Noninvasive measurement of the cerebral blood flow response in human lateral geniculate nucleus with arterial spin labeling fMRI.
To date, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) have primarily focused on measures of the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is an MRI method that can provide direct measures of functional cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes. Because CBF is a well-defined physiological quantity that contributes to BOL...
متن کاملMapping brain function using a 30-day interval between baseline and activation: a novel arterial spin labeling fMRI approach.
By comparing hemodynamic signals acquired immediately before and during activation, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is well suited for mapping acute changes in brain function. However, it remains unclear whether fMRI can map functional changes over longer periods. Here, we address this issue by empirically testing the feasibility of arterial spin labeling (ASL) fMRI to detect chang...
متن کاملContinuous Arterial Spin Labeling by a Separate Neck Coil with Inversion-Recovery Suppression of Static Tissue Signals (ir- cASL)
INTRODUCTION Arterial spin labeling (ASL) technique has been widely used to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) in animals and humans. This approach uses “pair-wise” subtraction of alternate images taken with labeled and non-labeled conditions to obtain a difference signal that arises only from inflowing “labeling” water. Although the static tissue signal from static brain water is subtracted out...
متن کاملBackground suppression in arterial spin labeling MRI with a separate neck labeling coil.
In arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF), pair-wise subtraction of temporally adjacent non-labeled and labeled images often can not completely cancel the background static tissue signal because of temporally fluctuating physiological noise. While background suppression (BS) by inversion nulling improves CBF temporal stability, imperfect pulses compromise CBF cont...
متن کاملCerebral Blood Flow Measurement Using fMRI and PET: A Cross-Validation Study
An important aspect of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the study of brain hemodynamics, and MR arterial spin labeling (ASL) perfusion imaging has gained wide acceptance as a robust and noninvasive technique. However, the cerebral blood flow (CBF) measurements obtained with ASL fMRI have not been fully validated, particularly during global CBF modulations. We present a comparison...
